The Olden Days. The Poudre River Irregulars were founded in 1994 but at first were very irregular indeed. They started with mostly out-of town musicians and played in places like the Bar Bazaar, in the old Northern Hotel in Fort Collins, as shown in this first photo from 1995 (with Bill Pontarelli, Bob Cooke, Alan Frederickson, and Dennis Condreay). One of the first publicity shots of the whole band was this black and white taken in 1997 (left to right: Bill Runyan, Gary Atkins, Dave Johnson, Bob Cooke, Bob Brewer, Neall Strand, Ted Turner, Christine Stevens). Also around this time, "portable" versions of the band began playing in summer at the Fort Collins trolley.
It took a few years for the band to stabilize, start playing at Avogadro's Number, and build a following. Here are some of the photos from that era, mostly from Avo's in 1998, when the band's first CD came out and its personnel were: Bob Cooke (cornet, leader), Bill Runyan (trombone), Neall Strand (saxophones, clarinet), Christine Stevens (piano, alto saxophone), Ted Turner (banjo), Roger Barnhart (string and Fender bass), and Dave Johnson (drums). Bob Jackson (trumpet) was a frequent addition during this period and, as usual, many guests sat in.
